National Tree Week Walk - 5th class room 26

The girls from room 26 went on a walk last week to celebrate National Tree Week.  Have a look at their report and photos below:

We went on a walk yesterday to celebrate National Tree Week. We worked in pairs to find different types of trees, flowers, insects and animals. We walked around the church grounds  and by Trim Castle and noticed lots of spring buds and flowers in bloom. We enjoyed being out in the fresh air and we saw many signs of biodiversity in Trim.

Spring photos from Lucy in Ms. McGale's class

Lucy C, from Ms. McGale's class sent in these lovely photos via our email address stmarysgreenblog@gmail.com.  She also sent in this message:

Hi Lucy C. here,

On Saturday morning I went out into my garden to find some examples of biodiversity and found the following:

Picture 1: is a Pulmonaria, one of the  first early spring flowering plants.
Picture 2: Hellebore- another example of an early spring flowering plant.
Picture 3: Fungus growing on a tree stump.
Picture 4: Ted our diverse dog...

Lucy also sent us in her pledge for Biodiversity:
“The earth is unique – we only have one,
The butterfly, the plants, people - we all need the sun.
Variety within the living world is the key to life:
At St.Marys school we’ll do it right!

Thanks for sharing the photos and your pledge with us Lucy!

Spring has sprung!!

Some of the First Class children went on a mission to spot signs of spring.  There were lots of signs to be seen!  We were also on the lookout for the gorgeous kingfisher bird which had been spotted down by the Boyne River.  Unfortunately we didn't get to see the kingfisher, but we saw lots of lovely flowers.

Minibeast Madness with Ms Kelly

Students in First Class were busy comparing and sorting lots of different mini-beasts. We discussed their habitats, movement and appearance.
During team-teaching we worked in pairs to discuss and sort mini-beasts into groups. We used Venn Diagrams to sort and then explained our results to the rest of the group.
During the next few weeks we will investigate the importance mini-beasts play in the food chain and also examine their habitats more closely.
